Negatives interview 24/04/23
MM: Can you tell us about your Band and who is your biggest influences
We are Negatives and we are a Tyneside-based Metal band. We formed in 2018 and on October 31st 2020 we released our debut single(s), “Kin / The Noble Rot”, and we haven’t stopped since. If we had to sum our music up in one word, it would be aggressive. All of us have a very eclectic taste, as a writing collective we consciously find influence from acts such as – Slipknot, Silent Planet, Lamb of God, Loathe, Gojira and Architects to name but a few.
MM: What would you say is your Band's favourite song?
When we formed way back when, a song we all really connected with was Northern Fires by Silent Planet and that really informed our writing going forward so I’ll go with that as our favourite.
MM: What do you like best and worst abt touring
We have yet to tour in Negatives but we all have experiences touring in different acts and professions, best part is seeing new places and meeting new people hands down. The worst part about touring is how quickly your sleeping pattern deteriorates.
MM: Which three Bands would be your ultimate touring buddies
A tough one for sure but we’d say - Northlane, Void Of Vision and Silent Planet
MM: Tell us the most memorable concert you've been to (other than your own) and why
A few of us attended Meshuggah at Manchester Academy last year, we couldn’t even bring ourselves to mosh we just stood there with our jaws hanging open in sheer awe.
MM: What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment so far with Negatives
The proudest moment is realising we have support from people other than family and close friends which is also lovely don’t get us wrong, to have support of any kind is really humbling to us, but to see someone we’ve never seen before at a show, singing along is amazing, we couldn't be more thankful for that!
MM: Which are your Two favourite Albums of all time
So hard to narrow down but a few favourites of ours collectively are: Slipknot - Iowa, Northlane - Alien, Machine Head - The Blackening, Loathe - I Let It In, Architects - All Our Gods
MM: Can you remember the first time you ever played live and how it felt to have people
We all remember it fondly, it was a sold-out show in our hometown and it was such a humbling experience, we’d gone almost three years without playing live so that night was a huge milestone for us.
MM - Who do you think influenced the world of Metal / Rock more than any other person
Would have to be Metallica, through sheer influence and mainstream crossover. The only band we’d say even came remotely close is Slipknot, whether it’ll happen again remains to be seen.
MM: If there was a song about yourself what would it be called?
We asked a friend this and he said ‘’Edgy’’ so we’ll go with that
MM: What's the most important thing to the band right now?
Consistency, both in terms of writing new material and playing shows, we don’t respond well to breaks.
MM: If you could do a cover of any song which one would it be and why?
We’ve floated around the idea of covering a Meshuggah track for a while, if we had to narrow it down, probably Demiurge,
MM: Tell us why we should buy and listen to Negatives
It’s cathartic and honest, we won’t ever claim to be breaking new ground with our music but we know that a listener will feel something and that is good enough for us.
MM: Four words to describe Negatives
Cathartic. Cinematic. Atmospheric. Chaotic.
