Ren Marabou Interview 30/04/21
MM: Can you tell us about yourself and who's your biggest influences.
I am a Viking Metal solo artist hailing from the Emerald Isle of Ireland. Viking Metal bands like Amon Amarth, Tyr, Wintersun, Ensiferum and Eluveitie have a big influence on my music.
MM: Where do you draw your inspirations and ideas from?
I'm draw my inspiration from Norse Mythology, Nordic Lore and Norse Paganism.
MM: What would you say is your favourite song?
My favourite song would probably be 'Hold the Heathen Hammer High' by Tyr. The track really inspired my first Viking Metal single 'Screaming Armour', which is also one of my favourite songs from my back catalog.
MM: Plans tour and festival wise for 2020?
Unfortunately, everything is still up in the air in regards to shows but there are definitely some gigs in the pipeline. We are just waiting on restrictions to lift to get the go-ahead.
MM: What can we expect from Ren Marabou live?
A high energy stage show full of chunky riffs, headbanging grooves, and singalong melodies.
MM: What do you like best and worst about touring?
My favourite thing about touring is meeting other bands and fans of my music. My least favourite thing about touring is when the tour comes to an end.
MM: Which three Bands would be your ultimate touring buddies?
Touring with Amon Amarth, Tyr and Wintersun would be awesome. They know how to enjoy themselves on tour.
MM: What's the most memorable concert you've been to (other than your own) and why?
Probably The Unholy Alliance Tour in Dublin 2006. Slayer, Inflames, Lamb of God and Children of Bodom. It was an incredible line up and every band was on top form.
MM: What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment so far.
Hard to pick one but signing with Misanthropik Records and landing endorsement deals with Cassidy Guitars and Skull Strings this year would definitely be my top three.
MM: Which are your two favourite Albums of all time?
I love so many genres of music so it would be impossible to pick just two albums but my two favourite Viking Metal albums are 'By the light of the Northern Star' by Tyr and 'Twilight of the Thunder God' by Amon Amarth.
MM: Can you remember the first time you ever played live and how it felt to have people watching you?
My first show was a long time ago now but I do still remember it fondly. I hadn't a clue what I was doing and there just so happened to be about 200+ people from my local area there. I was 16 with very little talent but balls of steel and the confidence of Lion. After that night I was hooked.
MM: Growing up which Bands posters did you have on your bedroom wall?
My bedroom walls where covered with posters and stickers I got from Rocksound, Kerrang and Metal Hammer magazines. Mostly Nirvana, Incubus, Deftones, Silverchair, Bush, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Metallica, Slayer, Testament and Iron Maiden.
MM - Who do you think influenced the world of Metal / Rock more than any other person?
So many incredible musicians shaped the music we love today. I feel every decade brings another force to be reckoned with that pushes musical boundaries and waves the Rock and Metal flag even higher. From Elvis, to Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles, to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, to ACDC and Motorhead, to Metallica and Slayer, to Pantera and Guns and Roses, to Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins, to Rage Agaisnt the Machine and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, to Incubus and Foo Fighters. One Legend who has kept fresh and relevant with an amazing work ethic and real love for all things 'ROCK' is Dave Ghorl. A true representation of someone who is keeping the rock n' roll fires burning on a mainstream platform.
MM - What's the most important thing to you and your music right now?
I guess to keep the momentum going. I've been on an amazing roll of late thanks to the hard work of my awesome team who do an amazing job supporting me. Reaching new fans and continuing to grow is probably the most important thing right now.
MM:If you could do a cover of any song which one would it be and why?
I'd love to cover the entire 1985 album 'Only the strong' by Thor, in my opinion it's the first ever real Viking Metal album. Doing that album justice but in my musical style would be awesome.
MM: Tell us why we should buy and listen to your music.
Well my back catalogue has something for everyone and my more recent albums are a feast for the ears of Viking Metal loving Heathren's or those with a love of Norse Pagan sounds and lyrical folklore.
MM: Four words to describe your music.
Riffs, Grooves, Melodies, Viking
