WinterBeach Interview  23.05.2021

Angel (synth) – Baz (drums) – Tiam (vocals)

MM: Can you tell us about your Band and whos your biggest influences

Angel: “I think we all have different sources of inspiration. Personally, I have a background from classical music, love Symphonic metal and Norwegian black metal, but still think that Depeche Mode and Alphaville rock as hard as the black metal guys. Muse is a band I never get tired of and Jean-Michel Jarre is one of the main reasons I chose to play synth.”

Baz: “My biggest influences are drummers like Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Randy Castillo (Ozzy Osbourne), Peter Criss (Kiss), Eric Carr (Kiss), Eric Singer (Kiss), Clive Burr (Iron Maiden), Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden), Frankie Banali (Quiet Riot/W.A.S.P./Billy Idol) and Phil Collins (Genesis)”

Tiam: “Yes, the members of WinterBeach have very different musical sources of inspiration. We can be inspired and influenced by everything from classical music to black metal. From discopop to indie rock. And of music all the way back from the 60's until 2021. But our heart is probably rooted in the 80's, then primed and sharpened by the decades after. The band which has influences me the most must be A-ha, and then I don’t mean “Take on Me”, but the more advanced masterpieces like “Scoundrel Days”, “Hunting High and Low” and “Summer moved on”

MM: Where do you draw your inspirations and ideas from

Angel: “My inspiration probably comes a lot from inner moods and observations.”

Baz: “The ideas arise during jamming in the rehearsal room.”

Tiam: “I can get inspired by everything! Gardening or watching a jumbo jets take off, but nothing is more inspirational than running in the Norwegian mountains”

MM: What would you say is your Bands favourite song ?

Angel: “I would say that we probably all have different songs in our repertoire we like. Still, I think it's fair to say that we all love Sky & Stars”

Baz: “Right now I think “Playing dead to survive” is my favorite”

MM: Plans tour and festival wise for 2021

Angel: “We hope to get on stage as soon as the pandemic has disappeared!”

Baz: “Unfortunately no plans for concerts yet, but we look forward to doing it again!”

MM: What can we expect from WinterBeach live?

Tiam: “As WinterBeach is like a whimsical mix of rock and electro pop, a concert will probably look like a meeting between Kiss without guitars and Pet Shop Boys with corpse makeup?”

Baz: “In other words: WinterBeach live will be an energetic and good experience for the audience”

MM: What do you like best and worst about touring?

Tiam: “The worst thing about touring is that it hasn’t been possible to tour for the last year and a half. The best thing must be that it hopefully soon will be possible again!”

Baz: “I like best the actual concert experience and the response from the audience. The worst part is that it can be quite hectic!”

MM: Which three Bands would be your ultimate touring buddies

Angel: “Depeche Mode, A-ha and Muse. Or maybe do something completely wild. Mayhem, Aurora and Samantha Fox.”

Baz: “I agree with Angel; Depeche Mode, A-ha and Muse.”

MM: What's the most memorable concert you've been to (other than your own) and why?

Tiam: “For me, it must have been when Suede played 3 completely different concerts during the Roskilde festival in 1999. All three absolutely fantastic, and at the very last gig the audience were given the opportunity to choose songs from their B-side catalog. Incredible! I haven’t seen that before (or after)”

Baz: “I have several good concert memories, but remember well one of the first concerts I was at. It was at the nightclub Garage in Bergen and the band was called “Kissin’ Time”, which was a Kiss cover band. I believe they played even better than the original band..?”

MM: What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment so far with WinterBeach?

Tiam: “The biggest accomplishment with WinterBeach is to get acceptance for our music far beyond the borders of Norway! We are now signed to the British “The Animal Farm” and have previously collaborated with companies in Germany and have fans from all over the world! Either the world has become smaller, or we have become larger…?”

MM: Which are your Two favourite Albums of all time?

Tiam: “Best pop-album: Scoundrel Days (A-ha) – best metal-album: Clandestine (Entombed)”

Baz: “Metallica: Master of Puppets and “a-ha: Hunting high and low”

MM: Can you remember the first time you ever played live and how it felt to have people watching you?

Angel: “The first time on stage ... was probably when I was around 14 years old and did a cover of “Wish you were here” by Pink Floyd, in connection with an event in the local community where I lived.

I know I had butterflies in my stomach. After the concert, some younger children came to me and wanted my autograph. I thought that was very cool”

Baz: “My very first performance was at the Kronstad Festival in Bergen in 1994. I played in a band called Fridge. Was really nervous in advance, but relaxed when we started to play. We reached the final of the competition.”

MM: Growing up which Bands posters did you have on your bedroom wall.

Angel: “I had lots of posters by Kiss and Van Halen. In addition, I had Samantha Fox and Sabrina. (As any self-respecting boy had at that time)”

Baz: “I had posters of Kiss, Iron Maiden and Samantha Fox.”

Tiam: “My walls were plastered with Samantha Fox boobs, Blackie Lawless sawblades and Morten Harket leather bracelets!”

MM - Who do you think influenced the world of Metal / Rock more than any other person

Angel: “I’m sure some would strongly disagrees with me here, but I say Van Halen and his guitar playing”

Baz: “Ronnie James Dio and Bruce Springsteen”

Tiam: “It’s a difficult question because every sub-genre of rock and metal have their own pioneers. But without bands like The Beatles, Stones, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura, Death, Paradise Lost, Entombed and Emperor the complexity of metal would have been on a completely different level.”

MM - What's the most important thing to the band right now?

Tiam: “The most important right now is to present the album “Playing Dead” and to get it’s 7 songs spread over the world, and of course to perform them live in front of an enthusiastic audience. In parallel with this we start writing new songs. We already have some good ideas on the block.”

MM: If you could do a cover of any song which one would it be and why?

Tiam: “In fact, we have a couple of hot candidates on the block already. It's about finding a great hit song that we could make our own, and preferably make sound even better than the original! I believe "Never Ending Story" with Limahl would be a perfect victim ;)”

MM: Tell us why we should buy and listen to WinterBeach?

Tiam: “Well, if you’re neither a die-hard fan of list-pop or indie-pop, neither EDM nor Synthpop, neither metal nor jazz, neither rock nor pop – Yes! Then WinterBeach is probably right up your alley! We sneak elegantly around all styles of music without being completely engulfed by any of them ”

MM: Four words to describe WinterBeach?

Tiam: “Cold – Warm – Dark – Light”

Final Words for your fans and our readers

Tiam: “It’s been so nice chatting with you! Hope to meet many of you at a gig in near future!”
