                                                                                Hybrid Spirits  Interview  16/11/20

MM: Can you tell us about your Band and whos your biggest influences

Hybrid Spirits are :

Nigel Rooke – Vocals, lyrics, keyboards and drum programming.

Paul Kirk – Vocals, lyrics, keyboards, guitars and drum programming.

Voodoo Jade – Vocals and lyrics

We formed in 2017 after Paul Kirk met Voodoo Jade via a collaborative project with a mutual friend.  Before that, Paul and Nigel were in a band for many years called “Aus der Asche” which became known as “From the Ashes UK”. After the collaborative project, Paul and Nigel invited Voodoo Jade to join them in their music venture, and Hybrid Spirits were born!

We all have different music tastes and influences. Paul likes anything from heavy metal to classical music, including Rammstein, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, The Cult, Neil Young.

Nigel loves electronic music, but also Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, Gary Numan. He also loves Ska music, Goth, Rock,  new wave, synthwave.  He particularly relates to songs with strong emotional connections.

Voodoo Jade loves most of the music which Paul and Nigel like, with some folk and new age music thrown in for good measure! Growing up, she was a big fan of Blondie, and now she loves Evanescance, Indigo Girls and Enigma.

MM: Where do you draw your inspirations and ideas from

We all have different hobbies, interests and personalities, so many things can inspire us to write.  It can be world issues such as war or Covid-19. It could be emotions. It could be interests, for example, Paul is interested in Astronomy and we based our first album “Astral Whispers” on NASA’s recording of soundwaves from planets in our solar system.  We don’t particularly have a set theme or sound, we like to see what happens! Voodoo Jade is into horror films and psychic / otherworldly things, and has written songs about horror films and vampires.  Our releases can vary from dark to light themes and music.  Between us, we have many things to inspire us which has led us to write songs on many different subjects!  Of course, our individual music tastes and experiences have an influence on what music we create as well.

MM: What would you say is your Bands favourite song ?

For us, it is War Machine from the Fear EP because it is the first song which we all worked on together. It is a dark, gritty, slow but emotive song about how wars never seem to stop. The song is dark and industrial in nature, but sung from the heart. Nigel and Paul had just recorded this when Voodoo Jade was asked to join. Although she’d never worked with music in this style before, she used her previous choir experiences to “bring light to the darkness”. However, we have also just released a song called “Mirage” which starts off light then all hell breaks loose in the chorus, stepping into the realms of metal and dramatic music….this song is becoming a close 2nd favourite!!

MM: Plans tour and festival wise for 2020

Unfortunately, Hybrid Spirits don’t play live or tour but we wouldn’t rule it out.  We are spread across the country and it is difficult for Voodoo Jade to travel as she is in a wheelchair following Meningitis in 2012.  We work on our songs electronically and remotely. Each song is passed to each and member to add what they wish, before a song is completed. Lockdown was a positive experience for music writing for us, as we had more free time to work on music individually. We don’t meet up in person very often, but we have regular band meetings on video chat.

MM: What can we expect from (Band Name) live

N/A sorry!

MM: What do you like best and worst abt touring

N/A sorry

MM: Which three Bands would be your ultimate touring buddies

The Cult, The Mission, Rammstein

MM: What's the most memorable concert you've been to (other than your own) and why

It’s probably because of Covid-19, but the last concert which Voodoo Jade and Nigel saw days before lockdown was “The Mission” on tour in Birmingham UK. They were about to leave the UK to tour Europe, which sadly had to be cancelled. We felt sorry for The Mission and other bands regarding loss of income, merchandise sales etc.  It probably sticks in our minds not just because it was awesome, but it was one of the last few days when life still seemed “normal” and live music at that time was still in full flow.

MM: What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment so far with

Being interviewed by presenters “Sunny and Shay” at BBC Radio West Midlands in the studio, in February 2019, about our “Astra Whispers” album and about us as a band. It was awesome!

Also, being played on radio across the globe, with some great fans, it makes everything worthwhile!

MM: Which are your Two favourite Albums of all time

What a difficult choice! Probably the first albums by Black Sabbath and Rammstein!

MM: Can you remember the first time you ever played live and how it felt to have people watching you?

Hybrid Spirits haven’t performed live as a band, but we have all played live in previous bands. The most common feelings are nerves before a gig, then adrenaline and elation, and shock when seeing people singing along with the music and enjoying it – there is no other feeling like it!  It’s amazing how the energy and feelings of the audience can affect what happens on stage!

MM: Growing up which Bands posters did you have on your bedroom wall.

Between the 3 of us, we can name Black Sabbath, Gary Numan, ELO, The Cure, The Mission, Neil Young, Blondie, AD/DC, Rush, Metallica, Japan, Thomson Twins, The Waterboys…..a wide range!

MM - Who do you think influenced the world of Metal / Rock more than any other person

We would have to say Ozzy/Black Sabbath for us personally because they formed in the city of Birmingham UK where we all grew up too. They were local (and international) icons and are still legends! Tony Iommi still lives fairly locally and does a lot of great work helping others, and is still on local TV fairly often.

MM - What's the most important thing to the band right now?

To us, it’s to continue to record music while we can, to stay safe and not get Covid-19! Also to maintain our presence on social media and to get our music out there for people to hear!

MM:If you could do a cover of any song which one would it be and why?

We are pretty proud of our cover versions of “Rain” by The Cult and “Vision Thing” by The Sisters of Mercy. We’d love to do a Rammstein cover but can’t speak German!  We’d also love to cover “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd. It is such a well constructed and emotional song with an amazing guitar solo! We’ve tried to recreate it but haven’t even come close!

MM: Tell us why we should buy and listen to your Band

We have an eclectic mix of music releases, but we don’t think that metal fans will be disappointed with our songs “Fear”,” Mirage” and “Mysteria-Hysteria”.  We are just regular people who love writing music in our spare time, who enjoy experimenting with different types of music and themes, and we appreciate all the positive feedback which we get. Of course, any purchases or streams all help us to raise funds to pay for the next upcoming releases, so thank you for your support!

MM: Four words to describe (band Name)

Alternative, Different, Eclectic, Passionate

Final Words for your fans and our readers

Many thanks for your time and support, we REALLY appreciate your interest. Before we go, we’d just like to highlight the charity song which we released earlier in the year which is still raising funds until April 2021. If anyone would like to help raise money for people affected by Covid-19 across the world, then please buy our song “Rain or Shine” (Charity Single) at

Funds will go towards the International Committee of the Red Cross for their appeal :

It’s not quite metal, but it was written during lockdown to reflect feelings of hope and solidarity, and we know how people love to help good causes.  Thank you again, and please stay safe!
