Undefeated Interview 08/04/20
MM: Can you tell us about your band and who’s your biggest influences?
UN: We’re a teen rock band from northern New York!
In Ian’s (bassist) words: Literally everything influences me. Whether it’s good, or even if it’s bad.
We take influence from all over, musical, spiritual. We live 45 minutes from the Canadian border. There’s a lot of classic rock and country up here, and it comes out whether we mean it to or not! So we embrace it, and make it more metal:)
MM: Where do you draw your inspirations and ideas from?
UN: Anything and everything. I (Meredith… the gal with green hair!) am huge into language. Words are a safe space. I tend to take influence from conversations, poems, books, quotes. All of it.
MM: What would you say is your band’s favourite song ?
UN: We’ve just started working on a metal/screamo song called Land of the Dead. It’s a brand-new song that we’ve only played live twice. It’s another step up in our musicality.
MM: Plans tour and festival wise for 2020?
UN:There’s a lot going on in the world with the COVID-19 virus. It has reached every corner. Due to this, all of our shows March through May are on hold. We were booked in New Jersey, Maine, and locally.
MM: What can we expect from Undefeated live?
UN:Our lead vocalist can flat out sing. Christian is a BEAST on the drums. The bassist adds smoooooth lines. Our show include ballads for those who like it from the heart; and some rockin’ tunes for you head-bangers. You’re not going to sit and listen to the same sound over and over.
MM: What do you like best and worst about touring?
UN:So far, we’ve only been on the road two days at a time. We don’t love road food, and have you ever met a drummer that likes being cooped up, seat belted, in a car? Yeah, me neither.
We all love people! I know everyone says that, but I guess most musicians do!
MM: Which three bands would be your ultimate touring buddies?
UN:Tenth Avenue North, The Rolling Stones, and Red. That would be a heck of a concert, wouldn’t it?
MM: What's the most memorable concert you've been to (other than your own) and why?
UN:I (Meredith) performed at Soulfest 2019, and that entire festival was crazy memorable. It was my first festival show, and Ledger was on the lineup. She rocks! We also went to Kingdom Bound to watch Tenth Avenue North. I was 15, and it was the first big concert I had gone to.
MM: What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment so far with Undefeated?
UN:We were nominated for the “New Group” Kindred Award. The award show was postponed due to the country going into quarantine, but we are looking forward to performing our first single, Shadows (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62xRoCrGHRg), at the showcase!
We’ve just released our second single, Where Are You (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEvEAQkIK0E), and hit over 1,200 views within 48 hours! Directed, filmed, edited by us! We have 3 more songs to follow later this year to complete an EP!
MM: Which are your two favourite albums of all time?
UN:Meredith: Anything Lacey Sturm. Killer vocals, and incredibly written!
Christian: War by Demon Hunter. He’s a sucker for good drums.
MM: Can you remember the first time you ever played live and how it felt to have people watching you?
UN:We played on the front lawn of a friend’s bookstore. It was just Christian (drummer) and I at that point. Honestly, we didn’t think so much about the people watching us. Everyone needs a place to just be themselves. We learned the value of this simple fact by watching how others made us feel. Acceptance is refreshing. That’s what drives us, we want people to walk away feeling refreshed.
MM: Growing up which band’s posters did you have on your bedroom wall?
UN: None of us were much for posters, our moms wouldn’t let us ruin the paint. Ian’s only poster (that he still has up) was a Beatle’s page from a calendar.
Christian’s walls are covered with long bows, atlatls (you can look that up), and soccer/lacrosse schedules.
MM: Who do you think influenced the world of Metal / Rock more than any other person?
UN: I just turned 18. I have no idea. The hair bands of the 80’s are always a good bet. They made rock/metal a mainstream genre.
MM - What's the most important thing to the band right now?
UN:To continue growing. Ian’s dad is a doctor, so we’re actually all quarantined against each other. Which makes everything difficult. We’re all continuing to work together as much as we can. The perfect time to write!
MM:If you could do a cover of any song which one would it be and why?
UN:Christian wants to do a drum cover of Sleep of Prisoners by War of Ages. He loves the tom part.
MM: Tell us why we should buy and listen to your band?
UN: People like good vocals. People like interesting drum beats. People like music with space in it; and people like introspective lyrics.
MM: Four words to describe Undefeated?
UN: Powerful, alive, refreshing, fun.
